How do I check my email messages from another computer?
Question: “I travel a lot, and I’m looking for a way to check my email from another computer, such as the hotel’s business center. How do I check my email messages from remote locations like this?”
It depends on the email program you’re using. If you have a web mail account, you can check it online from any computer. Of course, if you’re using web mail, you probably already know this. So I can safely assume you’re using a “regular” email program that’s set up on your home computer. In that case…
Checking Messages Remotely
For starters, you should visit the website of your email or Internet service provider. You can usually figure out who this is by using your email address. For example, my address ends with “austin.rr.com,” because I have a Road Runner email account.
If I wanted to check my email from a remote computer, such as a hotel business center, I would start by visiting www.rr.com (the website of my service provider). From there, I would look for “check email” button — or something similar. It would then ask me for my email address and password. Once I enter these items, I’d be able to check my email messages remotely. Pretty simple.
Don’t Know Your Email Password?
A lot of people don’t know the password for their home email account, because it’s generally not something you use every day. You set it up once, and then you just click your email program icon to check your messages each day (or 100 times a day).
So, if you’re like most people, you have no idea what your password is. No worries. All you have to do is contact your email provider. Tell them you’re trying to check your messages from another computer, but you forgot your login info. They will verify the account is yours by asking some basic questions, and then they’ll either give you the password or help you reset it. Some companies forbid employees from accessing customer passwords, so you might have to reset it.
