Question: “I was wondering how to put videos onto my website, as far as the best way to do it. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.”

There are several ways to put video onto a website. In my opinion, the best option is to host the video content on a third-party site (like YouTube), and then embed the code onto your site. If you don’t use this technique, you’ll have to put the files on your own web-hosting servers, and they can eat up a lot of storage.

YouTube will host your videos for free. After you’ve uploaded the file to their site, you would simply copy a snippet of code and paste it onto your web page (wherever you want the video to appear).

This is by far the best way to do it, if you ask me. Here are the benefits of using this method:

You can save a backup of the video file on your own computer, but store it on the third-party site. That way, the file doesn’t take up a lot of your own web storage (videos are much larger than other web files).

You can put the video on your website just by copying / pasting the “embed” code on YouTube.

If you want to share your video with a larger audience, beyond your own website, you can make it public on the YouTube site. You can also change the setting to private, if you only want people to see it on your site.

You can let other people comment on your video, or contact you through the third-party website.

It’s totally free.

This is the best way to put videos on a website, in my experience. Give it a try and you’ll probably agree. There are certainly other ways to go about it, but this is what I recommend (especially for beginners).

How to Upload Videos to YouTube

Uploading your videos to YouTube is a simple process. Their technology does most of the work for you. All you need to do is create an account, save your video in a file that meets their size and format requirements, and then upload it using the tools provided on their site. Once you’ve done that, you can add the video to your website in the manner described earlier. They have plenty of instructions to help you complete these steps, but it’s all fairly intuitive.

Here’s a summary of the steps involved:

Create your video using your digital camera, computer cam, or whatever hardware you’re using.

Edit the file as needed, using your video-editing software (if applicable).

Make sure the file meets YouTube’s guidelines for size and format. It must be no larger than 2GB, and no longer than 10 minutes total. You will probably have to compress the original “raw” video to reach these levels — that’s where the software comes in. Their website accepts most movie file formats (wmv, avi, mov, mpeg, etc.).

Create a YouTube account and read their terms of service.

Upload your video from your account admin area. This part is self-explanatory, as they have ample instructions to help you.

As for how to put the video on your website, this is the easiest part of all. Just visit the YouTube page for the video you’ve uploaded, and look for the “embed” button. Click on this button, and you’ll be presented with some web code that you can copy and paste. Add this code to your website, wherever you want the video to appear.

This article explains how to put videos on your own website, using YouTube. I hope you found it helpful. If you’re a blogger, and you’d like to share this tutorial with your readers, we encourage you to link to this page. Thanks for visiting!

Question: “My computer monitor gets dusty a lot. How do I clean my computer screen thoroughly, but without damaging it?”

The first thing you need to do is refer to your user manual / instructions for the monitor. If you’ve lost the original instructions on how to clean the screen, you can probably find them online through the manufacturer’s website.

From a structural standpoint, the face of one computer screen is very similar to another. But there are some differences as well. For example, I have an old PC upstairs with a huge, “old school” monitor. I also have a MacBook laptop, and it has a completely different type of computer screen and display. LCD flat screens are different from the big box-style monitors, and so on. So I would clean these in different ways, according to the company’s specifications.

Your manufacturer might provide some specific tips or warnings that relate to your model. So you should always start by reading the official instructions that came with the hardware.

How to Clean the Screen

With that disclaimer out of the way, here’s how to clean most computer screens safely and effectively:

Glass monitors – With these screens, you can simply unplug the power source and clean them with a light dose of regular glass cleaner. Don’t spray the cleaner directly onto the screen. Spray it onto a rag instead (indirect application). You don’t need much cleaner. Start with a small amount and see how it does. Repeat if necessary.

LCD flat panel monitors — These are not made of glass, so you need to clean these screens differently. If you have this type of unit, it’s critical that you read the manufacturer’s guidelines. These screens are more delicate than the old-school monitors, so you need to clean them using the recommended materials. Use a soft “microfiber” cloth, if you have one. Most computer makers will include these when you buy their product. Apple gave me a cloth when I purchased my laptop. In most cases, you don’t even need to use any kind of spray — you just wipe the screen with the special cloth. Wipe it often to prevent buildup of dust and fingerprints, and the cleaning process will be much easier. You can buy these cloths in most computer / electronics stores.

This article explains how to clean your computer screen safely and effectively. Remember the disclaimer we started with. You should always refer to the user manual that came with your hardware, to find out what the company recommends.

Question: “I travel a lot, and I’m looking for a way to check my email from another computer, such as the hotel’s business center. How do I check my email messages from remote locations like this?”

It depends on the email program you’re using. If you have a web mail account, you can check it online from any computer. Of course, if you’re using web mail, you probably already know this. So I can safely assume you’re using a “regular” email program that’s set up on your home computer. In that case…

Checking Messages Remotely

For starters, you should visit the website of your email or Internet service provider. You can usually figure out who this is by using your email address. For example, my address ends with “austin.rr.com,” because I have a Road Runner email account.

If I wanted to check my email from a remote computer, such as a hotel business center, I would start by visiting www.rr.com (the website of my service provider). From there, I would look for “check email” button — or something similar. It would then ask me for my email address and password. Once I enter these items, I’d be able to check my email messages remotely. Pretty simple.

Don’t Know Your Email Password?

A lot of people don’t know the password for their home email account, because it’s generally not something you use every day. You set it up once, and then you just click your email program icon to check your messages each day (or 100 times a day).

So, if you’re like most people, you have no idea what your password is. No worries. All you have to do is contact your email provider. Tell them you’re trying to check your messages from another computer, but you forgot your login info. They will verify the account is yours by asking some basic questions, and then they’ll either give you the password or help you reset it. Some companies forbid employees from accessing customer passwords, so you might have to reset it.
